Dental fillings are a safe, effective method of patching up ‘holes’ (or cavities) in the hard outer surface of the tooth, to prevent decay from damaging your tooth root.
Different materials have been used for teeth fillings in the past. You may remember amalgam fillings, which have a dark grey colour.
At Green Door, we use a composite material that is the colour of your natural teeth.
It’s extremely important to get tooth fillings as soon as you know you have dental cavities. This is because the tooth decay that caused the cavity can spread. If the decay reaches your tooth root, the tooth can ‘die’, and root canal treatment may be required. Tooth filling prices are much more affordable than the complex treatments you might need if you ignore cavities.
The best way to prevent tooth filling costs is by having regular check-up and clean visits with your dentist. That’s in addition to daily brushing and flossing. Your dentist can spot any problems before you develop cavities, and help you keep your whole mouth healthy.
Dentists try to keep dental filling prices affordable, but the best outcome is not to have to pay dental filling costs at all.
You can eat after teeth fillings. However, you must wait 30 minutes after treatment for the tooth filling material to set and for any local anaesthetic to wear off.
If you experience any tooth pain after your filling, it should be very mild, and easily manageable with over the counter medication. If tooth filling pain persists for more than a day or two after treatment, you should call and tell us.
Composite fillings take very little time. That means you should be in and out of the door in under an hour, and ready to eat and drink again 30 minutes after that. However, allow an hour if it’s your first visit to Green Door Dental, so we can make sure to get to know you.
Truthfully, composite teeth fillings can last a long time with proper care - usually between 5-10 years. As always, proper care means regular brushing and flossing, and never skipping your regular check-up and clean visit at Green Door!
Before your filling, your dentist will clear away any damaged parts of the tooth and clean off any remaining plaque. Then your dentist fills in the cavity with composite, and smooths it over. A special UV light hardens the material so your filled tooth is almost as strong as your natural teeth.
Your dental team will make you very comfortable throughout this part of the procedure. At Green Door Dental, noise-cancelling headphones and your choice of Netflix shows will make it go by quickly.
Some patients can experience tooth sensitivity after filling. Over-the-counter medication is usually more than enough to make you comfortable again. And if there are any other issues, you are always welcome to call Green Door Dental - we are happy to help.
