FAQs

What is a dental emergency?

faq plus icon

If you have severe pain in your mouth, jaw or teeth, you should consider it a dental emergency.

The pain could be caused by trauma — like a fall, a sports injury or an everyday accident. Or it could be caused by infection. Either way, severe pain is a warning sign and you should always listen to it.

It’s important to know when to go to an emergency dentist. Some scenarios that are considered dental emergencies include:
- Severe toothache or pain in the mouth or jaw
- Chipped tooth
- Cracked tooth
- Broken tooth
- Knocked-out tooth
- Dental abscess or excessive swelling, pain or pus around the teeth and gums
- Loose, cracked or knocked-out dental filling
- Loose, cracked or knocked-out dental crown
- Broken dentures

Not sure whether you need to see an emergency dentist for your situation? Just contact us and we’ll help you figure out how urgently you need care.

What should I do in a dental emergency situation?

faq plus icon

First things first — call us straight away so we can help you assess your situation and get you in to see an emergency dentist at our Moss Vale dental clinic or Gregory Hills dental clinic ASAP. Our dentists have emergency appointments set aside every day so we can usually fit you in on the same day.

We can also provide you with personalised advice on what to do while you wait for your emergency dentists appointment. Alternatively, we’ve provided some general guidance on how to care for different dental emergencies while you wait for your appointment in the other FAQs on this page.

Please note, we are not a 24 hour emergency dentist. If you require urgent care after hours, please go to your nearest hospital emergency department (click here for the closest emergency hospital for Gregory Hills and the closest for Moss Vale)or contact an after hours emergency dentist.

What to do when you have a toothache?

faq plus icon

There’s nothing worse than a painful toothache. But thankfully, there are a few things you can do at home to help relieve your tooth pain while you wait to see an emergency dentist near you.

First, keep your mouth clean by rinsing it with antiseptic mouthwash or a saltwater rinse made by mixing ½ teaspoon of salt with 1 cup of warm water.

You may also consider taking an over-the-counter (OTC) pain medication like paracetamol or ibuprofen to numb the pain. But remember to always read the label and use only as directed. Do not apply any painkiller or aspirin directly against the area of your toothache or on your gums as it may burn your gum tissue. After you have been assessed by a dentist, they may be able to prescribe you stronger pain medication if required.

If your toothache is caused by wisdom tooth pain, you may be wondering ‘can emergency dentists remove wisdom teeth?’ Yes, emergency dentists can remove wisdom teeth but this isn’t always the best or only solution for getting you out of pain. Your dentist will assess your situation and discuss the best treatment options with you, including whether tooth extraction is needed.

What to do when you have a chipped, cracked or broken tooth?

faq plus icon

Teeth may be strong but they’re not indestructible. Whether you were crunching down on some hard food or took an accidental hit to the mouth, a chipped tooth, cracked tooth or broken tooth should be assessed by an emergency dentist ASAP. If left untreated, the affected tooth could become at risk of infection or decay.
And you can call us for advice on what you might need and what it could cost.

After you’ve called us to book your emergency dental appointment, there are a few things you can do to help ease any discomfort while you wait.

Rinse your mouth with antiseptic mouthwash or a saltwater rinse made by mixing ½ teaspoon of salt with 1 cup of warm water to cleanse it. Avoid touching or playing with the affected tooth — even with your tongue.

If you’re experiencing any pain or swelling, you can apply a cold compress (such as an ice pack wrapped in a towel) on the outside of your cheek next to the affected tooth. Do not apply ice or a cold compress directly onto the affected tooth.

You may also consider taking OTC pain relief like paracetamol or ibuprofen but be sure to follow the dosage instructions carefully and do not apply any pain medications directly against the affected area.

Help! My tooth has been knocked out — what should I do?

faq plus icon

Call us immediately to book an emergency dentist appointment. If the knocked-out tooth is completely intact and unbroken, your dentist may be able to save it and put it back in its socket. But you need to act fast — the tooth must be placed back into the socket within 30 minutes of the injury.

Follow the below care instructions for the best chance at saving your knocked-out tooth:
- Do not touch the tooth root (the part that sits under the gum)
- Only handle the tooth by the upper part (the crown) with clean hands or a clean clothIf the tooth is dirty, rinse it with milk (best option) or water (if no milk is available)
- Do not let the tooth dry out — hold it in your mouth next to your cheek until your emergency dental appointment (if you cannot hold your tooth in your cheek, keep it in a small cup of milk)
- Avoid touching the open socket with your tongue or fingers

When should I go to the hospital for a dental emergency?

faq plus icon

If you’re wondering ‘do hospitals have emergency dentists?’ — the answer is yes. And in some cases, more serious dental accidents or oral injuries are better treated at the hospital. If you are experiencing heavy bleeding or think you may have broken your jaw, please go to your nearest hospital emergency room immediately.

If you’re unsure whether you need to go to the hospital or see an emergency dentist, don’t hesitate to call us and we’ll help you determine where to go for help.

How do I get an emergency dentist appointment?

faq plus icon

When it comes to emergency appointments, it’s always better to call us on 02 4601 3115 (Gregory Hills practice) or 02 4863 5050 (Moss Vale practice) rather than booking online. This is because our reception team have the ability to shuffle around our schedule where possible and may be able to fit you in for an emergency dentist appointment a lot sooner than our online booking system shows.

How much does an emergency dentist cost?

faq plus icon

At G, your emergency dental appointment will cost $65 — the same as our standard consultation. But if you need more complex dental treatment (like tooth removal, a tooth filling or dental crown), additional fees will apply. To see our full treatment price list, download our New Patient Guide here.

We know dental emergencies are stressful enough and you don’t need the additional worry of how to afford unexpected costs. That’s why we offer a range of affordable payment plans so you can get emergency dental care right now without the financial stress.

faq background

How can you prevent dental emergencies?

faq plus icon

Some dental accidents and injuries are unavoidable. But other dental emergencies like toothaches and fillings can be effectively prevented by having regular check-ups with your dentist every six months. Regular dental check-ups allow your dentist to catch and treat any small issues, such as tooth decay or gum disease, before they turn into bigger and more costly dental emergencies down the track.

faq background

What should I do after my emergency dentist appointment?

faq plus icon

After your emergency dentist visit, be sure to follow all your dentist’s instructions about aftercare closely. It’s also extremely important that you attend any follow-up appointments requested by your dentist for further assessment and treatment. This will give you the best chance at restoring your smile to full health and avoiding more dental emergencies in future.
