What are dental implants?

Dental implants can be used to replace missing, damaged or broken down teeth. They look, feel and function just like natural teeth, giving you a smile you won’t want to hide.

Dental implants are made up of two main components: the titanium implant which replaces the missing tooth root and the dental crown which replaces the visible part of the missing tooth. The implant procedure is carried out in stages. First, the implant is placed into the jaw. Once the jaw bone and gums have healed (around 6 months after surgery), the dental crown can be secured to the implant.

FAQs

Am I a suitable candidate for dental implants?

faq plus icon

Most patients with missing teeth are good candidates for dental implant treatment. We’ve helped many patients successfully restore their smiles after losing their natural teeth due to injury or gum disease. For patients with significant jaw bone loss, bone grafting may be required to add volume and density to the bone so a dental implant can be supported.

If you’re considering dental implants in Southern Highlands, book your implant consultation with us today. This is the best way to determine whether dental implants are the right solution for you.

How much are dental implants in Gregory Hills?

faq plus icon

At Green Door Dental Gregory Hills, a single tooth implant starts from $5,760. Keep in mind that dental implants cost will vary, depending on a number of key factors. You can learn more about the factors that affect the cost of dental implants in this article. You can also download our price guide for more information about our treatment fees.

Thinking about getting cheaper dental implants overseas? Read this article first — it explains the risks involved with heading overseas in the hope of a bargain-price smile. Spoiler alert: It may end up costing a lot more than you think.

Wondering how much full mouth dental implants cost in Australia? See our All-on-4 dental implants page for more information about replacing all of your teeth and the costs involved.

Worrying about the cost of replacing your missing teeth? There’s really no need! With our flexible finance options you can spread out the cost of your treatment into manageable instalments over time. Or if you’re eligible, you may even be able to fund your dental implant treatment by accessing your super.

How long do dental implants last?

faq plus icon

With the correct dental care and maintenance, your dental implants should last for many years to come. This means a good oral health routine with twice daily brushing and flossing, as well as six-monthly check-ups with your dentist.

Dental implants are made from titanium. This makes them extremely hard-wearing and long-lasting, able to withstand the same everyday pressure (like biting and chewing) that natural tooth roots can. Titanium is also a highly biocompatible material. This means that it fuses well with human bone and has a lower risk of rejection by the body. Over time, the jaw bone grows around the dental implant, creating more strength and stability for the implant tooth.

Will I have a gap during dental implant treatment?

faq plus icon

Don’t worry! You don’t have to be without teeth during your dental implant treatment. There are a few solutions to maintain your smile and function while your jaw heals and the dental implant integrates with the bone. Depending on the location of your missing tooth, a temporary false tooth may be worn during your healing period.

How painful is getting a dental implant?

faq plus icon

Most patients opt to have IV sedation (this is also known as ‘sleep dentistry’) during the dental implants procedure. This is a type of ‘conscious’ sedation where you remain awake, but feel very drowsy, relaxed and comfortable. Afterwards, you likely won’t have any recollection of the procedure. Local anaesthetic is also used during your procedure so you won’t feel any pain or discomfort. Our sedation treatments are safely overseen by Dr Zoe Rodgers, our dedicated medical doctor with additional training in sedation treatment. Learn about our sedation options in detail here.

You may experience some mild discomfort, swelling and bruising for a few days after your treatment, but this can be easily managed with over-the-counter pain medication.

Dental bridge versus dental implant: what’s the difference?

faq plus icon

Put simply, a single dental implant is used to replace a single missing tooth. This means, if you’re missing one tooth or a few individual teeth in different areas of the mouth, a single dental implant may be a suitable tooth replacement option.

However, if you’re missing several teeth in a row, your dentist may recommend an implant-supported dental bridge. This involves the placement of at least two dental implants in the jaw to secure a dental bridge of several teeth in place. The benefit of this is that it restores the function and appearance of the missing teeth without damaging the neighbouring (often healthy) teeth. A tooth-supported dental bridge, on the other hand, uses the neighbouring teeth to hold the bridge in place and may cause damage over time.
